The Private Services Boom in Numbers - and What It Means for Your Pharmacy's Marketing Budget

Every pharmacy owner knows the funding picture. Fewer talk about the other side of the ledger: the private services market is growing faster than anything community pharmacy has seen. Here are the numbers that matter in 2026, in one place - and what they imply about where a marketing pound should go.

The numbers

Private medicine access has nearly tripled: from 1.4% of dispensing in the year to January 2024 to 4% by January 2026 (IQVIA data presented at Sigma's 2026 conference). That's not a trend, it's a step change - and it's patient behaviour, not policy, driving it.

Weight management is the engine. The weight-management medicines market has grown at an average of 13.3% per month since May 2024 (IQVIA). Mounjaro is now the most commonly dispensed branded medicine in UK community pharmacy - 16.3 million units in the year to March 2026.

Travel is quietly booming too. Travel vaccinations grew 27.6% in 2025, and ADHD-related demand has compounded at 12.5% a year for a decade. Private services are broadening, not just spiking on one category.

Meanwhile the traditional model tightens. Nearly 60% of dispensed generics now carry Drug Tariff prices at or below £1 (versus 20.7% in March 2022), and England has lost over 1,000 pharmacies in a decade - 10,526 remain as of February 2026 (House of Commons Library).

Squeeze on one side, boom on the other. The strategic conclusion draws itself: the pharmacies that thrive will be the ones that capture private demand deliberately rather than waiting for it to walk in.

The part nobody says out loud

The private services boom is not evenly distributed - and clinical quality isn't what's distributing it. Patients choosing a weight management provider or a travel clinic choose the one they can find, trust and book. Which means the winners of this market are being decided right now by, bluntly, marketing:

  • Who shows up when the town searches "travel clinic near me"

  • Whose weight management service the local Facebook feed has heard of

  • Who has 60 Google reviews versus 6

  • Who takes a booking at 9pm versus "call us during opening hours"

None of that is about being a better pharmacist. All of it is buyable, buildable and - because most pharmacies still do none of it - cheap by competitive standards.

What the numbers imply for a marketing budget

The demand justifies real spend. A weight-management patient relationship runs for months; a travel family transaction is £150–£300+. Against customer values like these, a few hundred pounds a month of well-run local advertising isn't a leap of faith - it's the arithmetic of acquiring assets below their value.

The compliance moat rewards doing it properly. Weight-loss advertising is the most heavily policed corner of UK marketing - the ASA, MHRA and GPhC ran joint enforcement in 2025. That scares off the casual competition, which is precisely the opportunity for pharmacies that advertise inside the rules. Strict rules plus deep demand equals thin, beatable competition.

Seasonality is your budget's friend. Travel money works February to July, flu money works September to November, weight management works all year with a January surge. A pharmacy that moves one budget across the calendar outperforms one that spends flat - or worse, spends only when the diary is already empty.

Local is the only battlefield that matters. You don't need to outrank the multiples nationally; you need to own your catchment's searches and feeds. That's a game a single independent can win against any chain, because chains can't do local trust at scale - and your Google reviews are the proof.

The window

Step-changes in patient behaviour create windows: the providers who establish themselves as the local option while the market forms keep that position long after competitors wake up. Private access tripling in two years is exactly such a window. On the current numbers it will not stay open - or cheap - forever.
