Pharmacy SEO: A 10-Step Checklist for Independent Pharmacies (2026)

When an agency quotes you £1,000 a month for "pharmacy SEO", this checklist is most of what they'd do. Some of it you can do yourself in an afternoon; the rest you'll at least be able to buy with your eyes open.
Pharmacy SEO is local SEO. Nobody in Leeds needs your Portsmouth pharmacy to rank nationally — you need to own the searches your town makes: "travel clinic near me", "earwax removal" plus your town, "private flu jab". Here's the list, in priority order.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
For local searches, your GBP often matters more than your website. Claim it, then complete everything: primary category (Pharmacy) plus additional categories for your services, opening hours including bank holidays, real photos of the pharmacy and consultation room, and the Services section filled out with every private service and its price range.
Step 2: Build a review engine
Reviews are the strongest local ranking signal you directly control — and the thing patients check before booking. Systemise it: a QR code at the counter, a follow-up text after private consultations. Two reviews a week compounds into local dominance within a year. Reply to every one.
Step 3: One page per service — no exceptions
Google ranks pages, not businesses. If your travel clinic lives in a paragraph on your homepage, you don't have a travel clinic as far as Google is concerned. Every service gets its own page: what it is, price, duration, availability, what happens at the appointment, FAQs, booking button. This is the single highest-impact website change most pharmacies can make.
Step 4: Write titles humans click
Each page's title tag should say the thing and the place: "Travel Vaccination Clinic in Your Town — Walk-ins & Booked Appointments". Not "Services | Pharmacy". Titles are both a ranking factor and your advert on the results page.
Step 5: Match pages to real searches
Before writing, check what your town actually types. Google's autocomplete is free research: start typing "travel clinic…", "yellow fever…", "ear syringing…" and note the suggestions. "Ear syringing" may be outdated clinically — but if that's what people search, your earwax removal page should acknowledge the phrase.
Step 6: Nail the boring consistency stuff
Your name, address and phone number must be identical everywhere: website footer, GBP, NHS website listing, directories. Inconsistency quietly erodes local rankings. While you're there, make sure your NHS.uk profile is current — it's a high-authority link and patients genuinely use it.
Step 7: Add structured data
LocalBusiness or Pharmacy schema on the homepage, FAQ schema on service pages. It's copy-paste-level work for whoever manages your site and it helps Google display richer results. If your site is on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress, this is built-in or a plugin away.
Step 8: Earn a handful of local links
Five good local links beat five hundred directory spam links: the town's news site covering your new travel clinic, the local football club you sponsor, the chamber of commerce, a "meet the pharmacist" piece in a community magazine. One outreach email a month is enough cadence.
Step 9: Keep the compliance line in sight
Service pages for weight management need care: the ASA treats much of your website as advertising, and pages that lead with POM names or prices can put you offside. Write service pages around the programme and consultation. Our pharmacy advertising playbook covers the full rules.
Step 10: Measure with Search Console, not vibes
Google Search Console is free and takes ten minutes to set up. Once a month, look at three things: which queries show your site (impressions), which earn clicks, and which pages rank 11–20 — those are your near-misses, one improvement away from page one. That's your to-do list, written by Google.
The honest timeline
GBP improvements can move local visibility in weeks. New service pages typically take two to four months to settle into rankings for town-level terms. This is a compounding asset, not a campaign — but unlike ads, it keeps paying after you stop pushing.
